The disappearance of Ma, ChinaвЂ™s second-most famous person after Xi himself and the countryвЂ™s most successful entrepreneur, was another warning sign for global investors. Sun Dawu, an agricultural tycoon also got 18 years in jail last month after pushing back against the government. Last year, property billionaire Ren Zhiqiang was jailed for 18 years after publicly criticising Xi. The same year, the founder of financial giant Tomorrow Group, Xiao Jianhua, was snatched from a Hong Kong hotel room and taken into custody.

In 2017, China started imposing restrictions on the capital flooding out of the country and cracked down on debt-laden conglomerates such as property group Dalian Wanda and HNA Group, which were on massive overseas spending sprees in Australia and elsewhere. His signature anti-corruption drive wiped out many of the excesses that were a feature of both the state and private sectors. Is this some massive turning point?вЂ™ It is as inevitable as the sun rising in the morning that this was going to happen.вЂќ вЂќThe world doesnвЂ™t engage much with China,вЂњ says Tim Murray, China expert and the founder of hedge fund research house J Capital. President Xi Jinping has been constraining capital outflows and targeting powerful entrepreneurs for years, most notably Alibaba founder Jack Ma who disappeared late last year. There was not a single moment when the bubble burst for capitalism in China although those who operate in the system say the writing has been on the wall for years. At the same time, foreign capital was flooding into companies such as Alibaba, Tencent and Didi Chuxing via multibillion-dollar listings in New York, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
